EARLIER THIS YEAR, Lantra launched the 2025 Bridge Inspector Certification Scheme (BICS). This updated scheme aims to streamline the accreditation process, elevate standards and enhance the certification experience for bridge professionals.
The scheme includes a new knowledge-based online test and associate inspector certification level, with an updated and condensed e-portfolio system providing a range of supporting information. Developed using feedback from existing candidates and stakeholders, the scheme features modernised tools and innovative resources aimed at building greater accessibility, efficiency and inclusivity.
Operated by Lantra on behalf of the UK Bridges Board, the BICS accreditation recognises the skills, knowledge and behaviours required from bridge inspectors across the sector in the UK and Ireland.
Supported by the Bridge Owners Forum and the Department of Transport, BICS is one of the most widely used National Highway Sector Schemes in the UK. BICS 2025 establishes a transparent and independently assured quality standard for bridge inspection professionals.
By supporting both employee development and employer confidence, the scheme reinforces a commitment to safety, excellence and professional growth.
The new BICS knowledge-based test offers an independently regulated, easily-accessible online assessment that enables candidates to demonstrate their knowledge and awareness of specific aspects of bridge structures. The test evaluates an inspector’s knowledge of critical areas such as structural behaviour, material science, safety protocols and broader inspection practices.
Once they have successfully completed this test, candidates can become an associate inspector, a new entry-level certification. Certified associate inspectors will receive a digital e-card issued by Lantra, which serves as a gateway to further professional growth.
The updated e-portfolio system simplifies how inspectors document their experience and proficiency. By adopting a more concise and holistic approach, the new format eliminates unnecessary complexity and focuses exclusively on practical experience and competencies.
To promote collaboration and knowledge sharing, Lantra is also launching an online BICS community hub. This interactive platform will connect experienced inspectors with emerging professionals, fostering mentorship and sharing best practice. The platform will also offer access to experts and industry news.
